What makes a name work

Keep it short and sayable over the phone, avoid clever spellings people cannot type, and make sure it still fits if you expand beyond your suburb or add other services. Say it out loud and imagine it on a van and a voicemail.

Check availability and register

Before you print anything, check the name is free as a business name and, ideally, as a matching domain and social handle. Then register it with ASIC, usually after you have an ABN, on a one-year or three-year term. From 1 July 2026 the ASIC fee is $47 for one year or $108 for three years. The fees are indexed each 1 July, so check the current amount when you register.

One thing to know: registering a business name does not give you exclusive rights to it. Only a registered trade mark does that, so if the name is central to your brand, look into a trade mark with IP Australia as well.

Frequently asked questions

How do I register a business name in Australia?

Business names are registered with ASIC, usually after you have an ABN, on a one-year or three-year term. From 1 July 2026 the ASIC fee is $47 for one year or $108 for three years. Check the name is available, then register it. Fees are indexed each 1 July, so confirm the current amount before you pay.

Can two businesses have the same name?

No. ASIC will not register a name identical or nearly identical to one already registered as a business name or trade mark. Note that registering a business name does not give you exclusive or trademark rights on its own; only a registered trade mark does that.

Should I use my own name?

Your own name builds trust fast and is easy to register, but it is harder to sell the business later or bring on partners. A distinct brand name costs a little more effort up front and gives you more room to grow.
