What an Australian painting quote should include

A solid painting quote carries your business name and contact details (ABN strongly recommended), the client and job address, a dated quote number, the scope with clear inclusions and exclusions, quantities in square metres, the price with GST shown clearly, and a validity period. A valid tax invoice is a separate ATO document and must include your ABN.

Under Australian Consumer Law, a price shown to a consumer must be a single total that includes taxes such as GST. A price shown only to other businesses does not have to include GST, but you should make clear it is GST-exclusive. For a homeowner, lead with the GST-inclusive total.

Quote vs estimate vs invoice

An estimate is an approximate figure that can move; a quote is a firm price for a defined scope; an invoice is the request for payment once work is done or a stage is reached. Painters win more when they send a firm, well-scoped quote rather than a loose estimate. See the full quoting method →

Frequently asked questions

What should a painting quote template include?

At minimum: your business name and ABN, the client and job address, a dated quote number, a clear scope with inclusions and exclusions, line items with quantities in square metres, the price with GST shown, and how long the quote is valid. The generator above builds these from your numbers.

Word or Excel?

Excel is easier if you want the maths to total itself; Word is tidier for a fixed scope you send as a PDF. The live generator skips the choice: it prices the job and gives you a clean quote you can save, with no formula to break.

Is a painting quote legally binding?

A quote is an offer to do defined work for a stated price. Once the client accepts it, it becomes a legally binding contract, which is the key difference from an estimate (an approximation that is not fixed). Set out your scope, inclusions, exclusions and validity clearly, because acceptance locks them in.

How do I add GST to a quote?

If you are registered for GST, add 10% to the ex-GST subtotal and show the GST as its own line and the inclusive total. The generator does this when you tick "registered for GST".
